FAQ
🐴 Riding with a bitless bridle
What is a bitless bridle?
A bitless bridle allows you to ride your horse without a bit in its mouth.
With a bitless bridle the reins are often attached to the noseband. With a sidepull bridle it is attached to the sides, with a hackamore bridle it is attached to the hackamore shanks on the sides of the noseband.
A bitless bridle allows you to communicate softly and clearly without putting pressure on the mouth.
Is a bitless bridle suitable for every horse?
Yes. Almost every horse can be ridden bitless. Horses with sensitive mouths, old scars, or resistance to the bit often respond positively. It’s important to choose a model that fits the horse’s head shape and training level.
Can I compete with a bitless bridle?
In the Netherlands and South Africa, bitless dressage competition is allowed. Since April 1st, 2025, riders in the Netherlands can compete bitless up to the ZZ-Light level. Other countries are still catching up — within the FEI, bitless riding is not yet permitted in dressage. It is permitted in showjumping.
Is riding without a bit more difficult?
Not necessarily. Although it can be a learning curve in the beginning it is not more difficult than riding with a bit. It mainly requires soft hands and a balanced seat. Many riders find that their horse becomes more relaxed and responsive to their seat. For bitless riding a correct bridle fit is of the utmost importance.
How do I choose the right type of bitless bridle?
There are different systems such as the sidepull, cross-under, and hackamore, each working in a unique way. Our product descriptions explain exactly which model suits different types of horses and riders.
